Update from Mark Campbell Aug 24 2014

Mark Campbell—Superintendent

So you have updated information after the board meeting on Saturday, I provide the following budget information…

Objective—to reduce CUSD’s “structural deficit “…2 million dollars in cuts/reductions must be made (and plan in place by September 8th…submitted to the Calaveras County Office of Education)

Phase I cuts approved (approx. 1.1 million)
• Phase I cuts involve staffing all classrooms at 30:1 ratio (reduction of 5 elementary teachers, 2 middle school teachers, 1 high school teacher), reduction of Maintenance staff (2 positions), reduction or elimination of Pre School programs, reduction of administration (3 positions)
• Process will be initiated regarding layoffs of applicable certificated, classified and administrative staff
• Process will follow prescribed timelines in terms of preliminary notices (October/November) and final notices (March for administration, May for all others)
• Final determination could be altered by any changes in “conditions” (revenue increases, expenditure reductions in other areas, retirements)
• Any reductions in staff will not take effect until the 2015/16 year
Phase II cuts modified…(approx $875,000)—not voted on (to be agendized for 9/2)
• Consideration of TK-8 reconfiguration/Closure of Toyon Middle School officially on list (along with Small School Consolidation)
• Reduction/Elimination of Music and Sports taken off the list—programs are saved
• Direction for me to find $414,000 to replace the savings associated with Music/Sports cuts (to include possible reductions in Transportation, cuts to Media Specialists/Libraries, closure of Gold Strike High School)
• Final determination of cuts/reductions could be altered by any changes in “conditions” (revenue increases, expenditure decreases)
• Process for final determination will occur between September and December.
• Any final cuts/reductions will not take effect until 2015/16

Board Meeting–9/2
• Vote on revised Phase II list
• Present/accept overall Fiscal Recovery Plan (mapping timeline/process for implementation)

It is extremely important for CHAMPS to raise funds in order for our 2015-2016 students to be able to participate in sports. Please consider donating here.
