“This decision — it means a lot to me, especially being part of the band and sports,” said Sydney Valentine, an 11th-grader at Calaveras High School. “Sports brings the whole school together.” The Calaveras Unified School District faces a $2 million budget shortfall for next year. To avoid being taken over by the county’s Office of Education or by the state, school officials must turn in a balanced budget by Sept. 8.

Cutting $2 million means teachers, administrators and staff will be laid off, schools will be closed or consolidated and the sports and music programs will be cut.
